Expansion Cards

Expansion Cards

The system provides for up to 5 ISA expansion cards; with the optional VESA riser card installed, the system can support up to 2 cards adhering to the VESA VL-Bus specification.

NOTE: For systems with the DX2 processor, the bottom expansion card slot is restricted to a half-length size. The DX2 processor and its heat sink are mounted on a daughter card, which gets in the way of a full length card.

ISA Expansion Slots

5 ISA 16-bit expansion-card connectors reside on the ISA riser board; the riser board plugs into the RISER connector on the system board and is considered an extension of the system board.

NOTE: The bottom expansion card slot is restricted to a half-height length card if the computer has a DX 4 microprocessor.

The expansion-card connectors are labeled "ISA1" through "ISA5."

ISA Riser Board and VESA Riser Card

VESA Expansion Slots

The VL-Bus provides a standardized interface that lets certain high-speed peripherals connect directly to the microprocessor's local bus. The optional VESA riser card plugs into the VESA riser card connector (RISER_2) on the system board.

Expansion-Slot Limitations

VL-Bus cards must also connect to the ISA bus. The connectors on the VESA riser card are aligned with those of the ISA riser board, so that an installed VL-Bus card uses connectors on both the VESA riser card and the ISA riser board.

  • A VL-Bus card installed in connector VL1 also uses connector ISA2 on the ISA riser board.
  • A VL-Bus card installed in connector VL2 also uses connector ISA3 on the ISA riser board.
