Removing the Microprocessor: Dell Dimension XPS 66/100 MDT II

To remove the microprocessor, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the heat sink from the microprocessor chip.
    Press down on the spring clip on top of the heat sink.
    The clip will snap away from its mooring tabs on the socket.
  2. Remove the microprocessor chip from its socket using a tool similar to the one shown. (A tool is provided with a microprocessor upgrade kit from Dell).
  3. To avoid any bent pins, pry up a little at a time on two accessible sides of the chip until it is free from the socket.

To replace the microprocessor, follow these steps:

  1. Match the pin-1 corner of the chip with the pin-1 corner of the socket.
    Insert the socket and press down until fully seated.
  2. Attach the heat sink to the chip
  3. Run the System Setup program. Verify that the Microprocessor Type category is correct for the microprocessor that is installed.
  4. Boot the system from a diagnostics diskette and run the System Test Set group to verify correct operation of the computer system.
