Power Management: Dell Dimension P133v, P166v, and P200v

Power Management: Dell™ Dimension™ P133v, P166v, and P200v

The system provides an APM 1.1-compliant interface with 2 power management features: hard-disk drive spin-down and monitor control. In general, power management capabilities allow the system to be put into a power-managed "sleep mode" by either entering a user-configurable hot-key sequence on the keyboard or by the expiration of a user-settable hardware timer. When in the sleep mode, the system board reduces power consumption by using the power-saving capabilities of the P54C processor and also spinning down hard-disk drives and turning off DPMS-compliant monitors. Add-in cards supplied with APM-aware drivers can also be put into a power-managed state for further energy savings. The ability to respond to external interrupts is fully maintained while the system is in sleep mode, which allows the system to service requests such as incoming FAXs or network messages while unattended. With Power Management enabled, the monitor and the hard-disk drive(s) automatically switch into low-power mode during periods of system inactivity. The power management feature is implemented at 3 levels plus a disable. The 3 different levels apply to the monitor only; hard-disk drive operation is the same for all 3. When Power Management is disabled in the system setup program, only the timers are disabled, not the APM interface.

NOTE: It is important that a DPMS (Display Power Management Signaling)-compliant monitor be used with this system. Otherwise, there is a risk of monitor damage if Power Management is enabled.
