NOTE: To replace parts, follow the steps below in reverse order.
Removing the Cover
Removing the Cover
1. Turn off the power and unplug the AC power cable.
2. Unscrew the 1 cover-mounting screw on the back of the computer.
3. Disengage the 2 snaps on the bottom of the chassis.
4. Slide the cover straight back 1 or 2 inches, and tilt the cover up and back to pivot the cover from the
chassis.
Removing/Replacing the Front Bezel
1. Remove the cover.
2. Facing the computer's front panel, press in on the 4 tabs at the top and on both sides of the bezel.
3. Tilt the bezel toward you, and pull it away from the chassis.
Removing/Replacing a 5.25-Inch Plastic Front-Panel Insert
1. Remove the cover.
2. Remove the front bezel.
3. Hold the bezel so that you are facing its interior. Reach around to the front of the bezel, and pop
out the front-panel insert toward you.
Removing/Replacing the 3.5-Inch Plastic Front-Panel Insert
1. Remove the cover.
2. Remove the front bezel.
3. Hold the bezel so that you are facing its interior. Press against the tab on each side of the insert
until the insert snaps out.
Removing/Replacing Metal Inserts
1. Remove the cover.
2. Remove the front bezel.
3. Hold the insert in place as you use a 1/4-inch nut driver to unscrew the screws that secure the insert
to the computer.
NOTE: If the computer has only 1 drive in the 5.25-inch drive bay, you need to remove all the inserts and bend them at the perforation lines until they snap apart.
Removing/Replacing a 5.25-Inch Drive in the Drive Cage
1. Remove the cover.
2. Remove the front bezel.
3. Remove the plastic inserts if needed.
4. Remove the metal inserts if needed.
5. Disconnect the DC power cable and the interface cable from the back of the drive.
6. To remove the drive, squeeze the tabs on each side of the drive, and slide it forward and out of the
drive bay.
NOTE: When sliding the new drive into its drive bay, make sure that both drive rail tabs snap into place. If they do not, adjust the position of each drive rail by loosening the screws and sliding the drive rail forward or backward as needed.
Removing/Replacing a Drive in the 3.5-Inch Drive Bracket
1. Remove the cover.
2. Remove the front bezel.
3. Remove the plastic inserts if needed.
4. Unscrew the 2 screws that secure the front of the 3.5-inch drive bracket to the computer.
5. Slide the 3.5-inch drive bracket toward the back of the computer to disengage the 6 mounting tabs on the
drive bracket from the slots at the top of the 3.5-inch drive bay.
6. Unscrew the 2 screws on each side of the 3.5-inch drive bracket, and slide the drive out of the drive
bracket.
Removing/Replacing a Hard-Disk Drive in the Hard-Disk Drive Bracket
1. Remove the cover.
2. Disconnect any cables from the back of the drive.
3. Remove the screw securing the drive assembly to the chassis, and raise the hard-disk drive bracket away
from the power supply.
NOTE: Lay the computer on its side to remove the hard-disk drive.
4. Remove the 2 screws on each side of the hard-disk drive bracket that secure the drive to the bracket.
5. Slide the drive out of the hard-disk drive bracket.
Removing/Replacing the Power Supply
1. Remove the cover.
2. Disconnect the DC power cables from the system board, from any drives, and from any expansion cards.
3. Remove the front bezel.
4. Remove the drive-bracket mounting screw that secures the hard-disk drive bracket to the computer's back
panel, and raise the bracket away from the power supply.
5. While holding the hard-disk drive bracket up, remove the 2 screws that secure the power supply to the
computer's back panel and the 2 screws that secure the power supply to the chassis.
Lift the power supply out of the computer.
NOTE: Lay the computer on its side to remove the power supply; holding the hard-disk drive bracket and removing the power supply at the same time can be difficult.
Removing/Replacing the Card Guide Assembly and Components
1. Remove the cover.
2. Disconnect any cables connected to any expansion cards installed in an expansion slot, and remove the
expansion cards.
3. Remove the front bezel.
4. Remove the 2 screws that secure the power switch assembly to the front panel of the computer, and move
the power switch out of the way.
5. Disengage the card guide assembly by pressing inward on the two mounting tabs that secure the assembly
to the front panel.
6. Disconnect the cables for the hard-disk drive access indicator assembly, the power indicator assembly,
and the reset switch assembly from the system board, and then lift the card guide assembly out of the
computer.
Removing/Replacing the Reset Switch Assembly
1. Remove the front bezel.
2. Disconnect the reset switch cable from the RESET connector on the system board
3. Thread the cable through the ferrite cylinder attached to the card guide.
4. Use a small screwdriver to push the reset switch assembly through its bracket in the card guide and into
the interior of the computer.
Removing/Replacing the I/O Extender Boards
NOTE: The extender boards are 2 expansion cards installed in the computer. The video connector and parallel port connector are on one extender board; the 2 serial port connectors are on the other one.
1. Disconnect any cables from the ports on the extender boards.
2. Remove the retaining screw from the card-mounting bracket attached to the extender board
3. Grasp the extender board, and carefully pull it out of its connector on the system board.
Removing/Replacing the Video-Memory Upgrade Chips
1. Insert the chip-removal tool into the openings at the ends of the chip.
2. Press inward on the sides of the tool.
3. Lift the chip out of its socket.
Removing/Replacing the Heat Sink Assembly and Microprocessor
1. Remove the cover.
2. Remove any expansion cards that block access to the microprocessor.
3. Remove the heat-sink securing clip from the microprocessor/heat sink assembly.
Press on the back of the clip with a small screwdriver to release it.
4. Push outward and then upward on the microprocessor-socket release lever to rotate it to its fully
vertical position.
5. Lift the microprocessor/heat sink assembly out of its socket.
6. Use the dented corner of the chip to orient the replacement chip in the same direction as the chip you
removed.
Removing/Replacing the Battery
1. Remove the cover.
2. Pry the battery out of its socket with a blunt, nonconductive object.
Removing/Replacing the System Board
1. Remove the cover.
2. Disconnect any cables attached to the port connectors on the I/O panel.
3. Disconnect the cables attached to the system board.
4. Remove any expansion cards.
5. Remove the 5 screws that secure the system board to the bottom of the computer.
6. Lift the left edge of the system board up slightly, and then pull the system board to the left until the
plastic standoffs in the system board can be lifted out of the slots in the floor of the computer. Then
remove the system board from the computer.
