Installation Overview
This document provides instructions for installing or completing the
setup of the Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server operating system for use on your
Dell� PowerEdge� system.
Getting Started
Before you begin, review the documentation that came with the Microsoft
Small Business Server software for important product information.

NOTE: Microsoft Small Business Server must be installed
on a single network with a single primary domain controller. Do not install this product
on a network with multiple domains. |
System Components
To complete the installation, you must have the following minimum system
requirements. For a complete listing of system requirements, see your Microsoft Small
Business Server documentation.
- 64 MB of RAM or more
- 2-GB formatted hard-disk drive with a minimum 1.5-GB formatted partition
- Fax/modem
- TCP/IP running on your system
Installation Instructions
The following sections provide instructions for completing the setup of
and/or reinstalling Microsoft Small Business Server.
To complete the setup of Microsoft Small Business Server on your system,
perform the steps in Completing
the Setup of Microsoft Small Business Server.
If you need to reinstall Microsoft Small Business Server on your system,
perform the steps in Reinstalling Microsoft Small Business Server.
Setting up the operating system takes at least 1 hour to complete.
Depending on your systems internal and external devices, additional setup time may
be required.
Before you turn on your computer system for the first time, you must
connect the keyboard, monitor, mouse, and fax/modem, and install any other devices that
you intend to use with your system.

NOTES: To ensure that Microsoft Small Business Server
detects your external fax/modem, plug in and turn on the fax/modem before you begin the
installation process. If your system has an internal
fax/modem, it is automatically detected during the installation process. |
Creating Driver Diskettes
Drivers for the Windows NT operating system are provided on the Dell
Server Assistant CD for use with Microsoft Small Business Server. You will need to
create diskettes with these drivers if you need to reinstall Microsoft Small Business
Server or if you need to update the existing drivers. To create the required driver
diskettes, use the following procedure with the Dell Server Assistant CD:
- Insert the Dell Server Assistant CD into the servers CD-ROM
drive and start the system.
- When the Dell Server Assistant main menu appears, select
Create Diskettes and press <Enter>.
- Select Create Operating System Support Diskettes and
press <Enter>.
- Select the icon for your operating system version and press
<Enter>.
- Select Create Driver Diskette and press <Enter>,
then select OK and press <Enter>.
- At the prompt, insert a blank diskette into the diskette drive, select OK,
and press <Enter>.
- When the message The diskette was created successfully appears, select OK and
press <Enter>.
- Repeat steps 5 through 7 for each additional diskette to be created.
- When you have created the last diskette, select Exit and
press <Enter>.
- At the Exit Confirmation dialog box, remove the Dell
Server Assistant CD and the newly created diskette, select OK, and
press <Enter> to continue.
The system reboots.
Completing
the Setup of Microsoft Small Business Server
If Dell installed Microsoft Small Business Server on your system,
perform the following steps to complete the installation:

CAUTION: Do not change any network parameters, including the
TCP/IP settings, from their defaults. |
- Turn on your system, including any attached peripherals.
 |
NOTE: Ensure that the external fax/modem is plugged in
and turned on before you begin the installation process. |
The Dell license agreement message appears followed by the Important
Technical Support screen, which displays your service tag number and/or the
express service code number. Write down these number(s) and store them where you can
access them conveniently should you ever require technical support.
The Setup program then examines your computers hardware and copies to your hard-disk
drive the files needed to run Microsoft Small Business Server.
- When prompted, insert the MS BackOffice Small Business Server Disc 1 CD
into the CD-ROM drive and press <Enter>.
Information about your systems components is displayed.
After several minutes, the system reboots and the Microsoft software license agreement
appears. As with the Dell software license agreement, it is important that you read and
understand the agreement.
- Click the I Agree button if you accept the Microsoft
agreement.
You must accept the agreement to proceed with the installation.
The Setup window appears. The system copies files to the hard-disk drive,
and then displays the Name and Organization window.
- Type your name and organization name and click Next>.
Your name and organization name can each be up to 50 characters in
length.
You must enter an organization name to complete the installation.
Microsoft Small Business Server automatically enters a computer name and domain in the
respective fields based on the organization name; however, these fields can be edited.
- When the Registration window appears, enter your product
ID number and click Next>.
The product ID number is the 20-digit number located on the
Certificate of Authenticity that is attached to the Microsoft documentation. (The
certificate is green and has a silver hologram.)
- When a message appears asking you to confirm the information that you
entered, click Next>.
- Click Next> when prompted to install the network
components.
- Click Change when the Install New Modem window
appears.
- From the list of fax/modems, select the fax/modem you purchased from
Dell. For more information, refer to the documentation that came with your fax/modem.
- Click OK, and then click Next>.
The Date/Time Properties window appears.
- Click the appropriate date and time properties for your location in the Time
Zone window, and then click Close.
A series of messages appears while the system updates.
- When prompted, insert the MS BackOffice Small Business Server Disc 2
CD into the CD-ROM drive and click OK.
- When the Welcome window appears, click Next>.
- When the Dial Up properties window appears, enter your
country, area code, and dial-out number in the fields provided, and then click Next>.
- Enter your company ID information and click Next>.
- When the Installation Mode window appears, ensure that
the Complete Install radio button is selected and click Next>.
- When the Administrator Account window appears, type your
administrator password in the Password field and in the Confirm
Password field, and then click Next>.
The administrator password is the user account used to manage the
overall network configuration. It can be up to 14 characters in length and is case
sensitive.

NOTE: The administrator password controls maximum
access to your computer and should be kept in a safe place. |
The system copies files to the hard-disk drive and then completes the
installation.
- When prompted, restart your system.
You must restart your system for the changes to take effect.
- Refer to any Dell-provided documentation for installing any service or
support packs, if applicable to your system.
Reinstalling
Microsoft Small Business Server

CAUTION: Do not change any network parameters, including the
TCP/IP settings, from their defaults. |
To reinstall Microsoft Small Business Server, perform the following
steps:
- Turn on your system, including any attached peripherals.

NOTE: Ensure that the external fax/modem is connected
to the phone line and turned on before you begin the installation process. |
- Insert the Microsoft Small Business Server diskette labeled "Boot
Diskette" into the diskette drive.
After a series of messages, the Setup window
appears and the system begins to copy files to the hard-disk drive.
- When prompted, insert disk 2 into the diskette drive and press
<Enter>.
- When prompted, insert disk 3 into the diskette drive and press
<Enter>.
- When prompted, type s to load the drivers from the diskette onto your hard-disk drive, and then press
<Enter>.
- When prompted for the driver diskette, insert the SCSI driver diskette
that you created from the Dell Server Assistant CD into the diskette drive, and
then press <Enter>.
The system displays information about the drivers on the diskette.
- Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each SCSI driver diskette you created from the Dell
Server Assistant CD.
- When prompted, insert the MS BackOffice Small Business Server Disc 1
CD into the CD-ROM drive and press <Enter>.
Information about your systems components is displayed.
- Use the up- or down-arrow keys and press <Enter> to update a system
component. Otherwise, press <Enter> to select the default values.
The Setup program then examines your computers hardware and
copies to your hard-disk drive the files needed to run Microsoft Small Business Server.
After several minutes, the system reboots and the Microsoft software
license agreement appears.
- Perform steps 3 through 19 of Completing
the Setup of Microsoft Small Business Server to complete the
reinstallation of the operating system.

CAUTION: After reinstalling Microsoft Small Business Server, do
not change any network parameters from their defaults, including the TCP/IP settings, the
server name, or the administrator password. Changing any network parameters from their
original settings can result in configuration conflicts that can render the operating
system unusable. |
