Using the Tape Drive: Dell™ PowerVault™ 110T LTO Tape Drive User's Guide

Operating the DriveLoading, Unloading and Write-Protecting CartridgesCaring for Tape CartridgesCleaning the Tape Mechanism

Operating the Drive

Switch on external drives using the power switch on the front panel (see Figure 1), and then switch on the computer. The tape drive will run its hardware self-test, which takes about 2 seconds. At the end of the hardware self-test, the Ready light should be on.

Figure 1. Switching on the Drive

If you have problems during self test

If the drive fails to execute power-on self-test and the LEDs remain off, check power is being supplied to the drive. The power on/off switch incorporates a green LED. If this is not on, check the power cable connection and replace the cable if necessary. You can use the power cable from your monitor or another device to check that the connection is working.

If the Ready light is off and the other LEDs are on solidly, check whether there is a cartridge in the drive. Remove it, power down the drive and power it up again.

If the fault condition persists, call for assistance.

Resetting the Drive

Figure 2. Resetting the Drive

There is a Reset button (see Figure 2) on both internal and external drives. Use this button to reset the drive without powering off the drive and computer, for example if the drive stops responding. (Use something thin, like the end of a paperclip to press the reset.)

Drive Activity Indicator Operation

  • If the top LED green light on the front panel is On, then the drive is ready for use.

  • If the top LED light is Off: the drive power is off or there was a failure during self-test

  • If the the top LED green light is Flashing: the drive is busy. For example: it is carrying out Write, Read, Self Test or firmware download.

  • If the second LED amber light is Flashing:the drive has suffered an unrecoverable hardware failure.

Loading, Unloading and Write-Protecting Cartridges

Only use LTO Ultrium format cartridges with your drive, as specified in the LTO ULTRIUM standard. Do not use DLTIIItape or DLTIVtape cartridges. Ensure that only one label is stuck to the label area of the cartridge. Never use non-standard labels, and never stick anything to the cartridge other than in the label area.

Loading a Tape Cartridge

Figure 3. Loading

  1. Insert the cartridge into the slot in front of the drive with the white arrow uppermost and facing the drive door as shown in Figure 3. (The label and write-protect switch are on the rear face of the cartridge.)

  2. Apply gentle pressure on the rear of the cartridge until the drive takes the cartridge and loads it.

The Ready light flashes green while the drive performs its load sequence. When the cartridge is loaded, the Ready light shows steady green.

Do not try to force the cartridge if it does not load properly. The drive will eject the cartridge after about 10 seconds so you can load it again.

Unloading a Tape Cartridge

Figure 4. Unloading

  1. Press the Unload button on the front panel.
During the unload sequence the READY light flashes green. The drive completes any task it is currently performing, winds the tape to the beginning and ejects the cartridge. Once the tape has rewound, the eject cycle will take less than 13 seconds.

  2. Remove the cartridge (see Figure 4) and store it in its plastic case in a cool, dry atmosphere.
CAUTION: Do not remove a tape cartridge while the drive activity indicator is on.

Setting the Write-Protect Switch on Tape Cartridges

If you want to protect the data on a cartridge from being altered or overwritten, you can write-protect the cartridge. You must do this before you insert the cartridge. If you slide the red tab after the cartridge is inserted in the drive, the change will not take effect until the cartridge is removed and reinserted.

CAUTION: Write-protection will not prevent a cartridge being erased by bulk-erasure or degaussing. Do not bulk erase Ultrium format cartridges. This will destroy pre-recorded servo information and render the cartridge unusable.

Figure 5. Setting the Write-Protect Switch

To write-protect a cartridge, slide the red tab by the label area on the rear face of the cartridge to close the hole (as shown on Figure 5).

NOTE: the padlock on the tab that indicates that the cartridge is protected.

To write-enable a cartridge, slide the red tab back so that the hole is open

Caring for Tape Cartridges

CAUTION: Ensure that only one label is stuck to the label area of the cartridge. Never use non-standard labels, and never stick anything to the cartridge other than in the label area.

Only use Ultrium LTO format cartridges in temperatures in the tape drive's operating range from 10C to 35C (50F to 95F) and 20 to 80% relative humidity (noncondensing). If you expose cartridges to temperatures outside the operating limits, stabilize them before you use them. To do this, leave the cartridges in the operating environment for 24 hours.

  • Store cartridges at temperatures between 16C and 32C (61F and 90F ) with a relative humidity between 20% and 80%.

  • Always keep the cartridges in a clean environment.

  • Always store cartridges in their plastic cases when not in use.

  • Do not touch the tape.

  • Do not attempt to clean the tape path or tape guides inside the cartridge.

  • Do not leave cartridge tapes in excessively dry or humid conditions.

  • Do not leave cartridges in direct sunlight or in places where magnetic fields are present (for example, under telephones, next to monitors or near transformers).

  • Do not drop cartridges or handle them roughly.

  • Do not stick more than one label onto cartridges; extra labels can cause the cartridges to jam in the tape drive.

  • Do not use cartridges beyond their useful life.

Condensation can be a problem for tape drives and cartridges, where a thin tape is passing across a rapidly spinning drum. To minimize the chance of condensation, stay within the specifications for using and storing cartridges above and observe the following guidelines:

  1. Position the drive where the temperature is relatively stable - away from open windows, heat sources and doors.

  2. Avoid leaving cartridges in severe temperature conditions, for example, in a car standing in bright sunlight.

  3. Avoid transferring data (reading from and writing to cartridges) when the temperature is changing by more than 10C (18F) per hour.

  4. If you bring a cold tape drive or tape cartridge into a warm room, allow time for it to warm to room temperature before using it. For example, if you have moved the drive from a cold car to a warm room, allow time for the drive to reach room temperature (up to 24 hours if the temperature change is extreme).

Cleaning the Tape Mechanism

DELL PowerVault 110T LTO drives have been developed to have a minimal cleaning requirement. The Use cleaning cartridge orange LED on the tape drive will flash when the drive needs cleaning. Only insert a cleaning cartridge into the tape drive when the light flashes.

CAUTION: Use only Dell approved cleaning cartridges in the DELL PowerVault 110T LTO drive. Use of any other type of cleaning cartridge can damage the read/write head in your drive. If you load any other type of cleaning cartridge or method, the DELL PowerVault 110T LTO drive ejects it immediately.

A cleaning cartridge is supplied with each tape drive. Do not use swabs or other means of cleaning the heads. The cleaning cartridge uses a special tape to clean the tape heads.

A cleaning cartridge can be used up to 15 times. If the cleaning cartridge is ejected immediately then it has expired or it is not a Dell approved cleaning cartridge. Discard it and use a new one.

  1. Insert a cleaning cartridge into the drive. The tape drive automatically loads the cartridge and cleans the heads.
During the cleaning cycle the orange Use Cleaning Cartridge LED will be on and the green Ready LED will flash.
At the end of the cleaning cycle, the drive ejects the cartridge. The cleaning cycle can take up to 5 minutes. If the cleaning cartridge ejects immediately, it has expired or it is not a Dell approved Ultrium cleaning cartridge. In this case, discard the cleaning cartridge and repeat the operation with a new one.

  2. Remove the cleaning cartridge from the drive.
