When a failure occurs, the library firmware performs error recovery and reporting.
Error reporting includes Service Action Codes (SACs), Operator Intervention
Messages, and Operator Information Messages. All of these messages are discussed
and explained here. In addition, information on how to interpret the drive LEDs
is also discussed here.
If a failure requires operator service, a two-byte Service Action Code (SACs)
is generated and displayed on the Operator Panel. These codes indicate a specific
task that should be taken. Table
1 lists each SAC and the recommended actions.

An intermittent scanning error was detected. During Demo, the library
performs inventory after each complete demo cycle and detects a mismatch
between the number of cartridges scanned and the its previous database. |
| Note the number of cartridges installed in the library and use the
Operator Panel to compare this information with the number of cartridges
reported by the library. Examine the cartridges that are installed but
not reported by the library for proper cartridge labels, replace labels
if necessary. Note that if a whole column of cartridges is missing, the
column fiducial label can be defective, in this case the whole storage
column must be replaced.
If all labels are correct, clear the SAC and retry the Demo program |

| 46 xx |
The barcode scanner detected a cartridge when one was not expected.
This occurs because the magazine's fiducial label was not scanned by the
library. Therefore, the library does not recognize the magazine as being
installed in the column. |
| This problem is caused by a magazine fiducial label that is too reflective
for the Barcode scanner to read. Cover the fiducial label with a piece of
translucent scotch tape to correct this problem. |
| Check for a dirty, damaged, missing or wrong fiducial label on the magazine
containing the cartridge in question. |

A failure was detected in the drive communication hardware
within the Library: the Library cannot communicate with one or more drives
(note the physical location of the failing drive, this information is
presented with the SAC). |
| If the accompanying message indicated that the Library cannot communicate
with one specific tape drive:
- Re-seat the drive in question by loosening the two thumbscrews, remove
the drive and re-install it in the same drive slot.
- Replace the failing Tape Drive Module.
|
| 94 xx |
Communication was previously established between the Library
and the tape drive but the Library detected that communication is no longer
present or the drive status is not as expected.
 |
NOTE:
The coordinates of the failing tape drive sled are posted on the Operator
Panel, but if this information was reset by the operator, it can be
retrieved by going to the error log and referring to the error modifier
"xxxx". This value will show the failing drive. |
|
| If the SAC modifier "xx" = "00":
- Re-seat the drive in question by loosening the two thumbscrews, remove
the drive and re-install it in the same drive slot.
- Check to see if there is a cartridge in the failing tape drive that
prevents the drive from becoming ready: Eject the cartridge and retry
the operation then replace the Tape Drive Module if appropriate.

Operator Information Messages are messages that display on the Operator Panel
and give the library status. Table
3 explains the variables associated with the Operator Information messages.
Each drive has LEDs that indicate drive status. The general meaning of each
LED is described below. For more information, see the applicable drive manual,
available on the manufacturer's website.
The IBM® TotalStorage® LTO Ultrium 2 and LTO Ultrium 3 tape drives
(referred to in this manual as LTO-2 and LTO-3) have one LED that can be green
or amber.
The Quantum SDLT 220 and 320 drives have three LEDs.
The Hewlet-Packard SureStore Ultrium Tape drive (referred to in this manual
as LTO-1) has four LEDs.
When the SDLT tape leader fails to engage with the SDLT drive leader, a drive
hardware failure may occur. A damaged or mishandled cartridge is the most likely
cause of SAC Error 9B xx Drive Thread Error. The drive may be recoverable depending
on the magnitude of damage to the cartridge.
