Before Data Organizer opens its main window, it must know which servers have arrays with
LUNs that you want to manage during the session. You can specify these servers in one of the
following ways:
- Put the server hostnames in a .hosts file in your home directory.
- Put the server hostnames in a file pointed to by the environmental variable
RAID_ARRAY_HOSTS, and let Data Organizer use this file.
- Use Data Organizer's Host Administration window, which Data Organizer opens if the
previous two options are not available.
To start a Data Organizer session
- Log in to the management station as Administrator or someone who has
administrative privileges.
- From the Windows NT taskbar, follow the path
Start Programs
Dell OpenManage PowerVault Manager
Data Organizer
The following Dell OpenManage Data Organizer information window opens.
Figure 2-2. Dell OpenManage Data Organizer information window

- In the Dell OpenManage Data Organizer information window, click the OK button
or wait 30 seconds for the window to close automatically.
Data Organizer looks first in your home directory for a .hosts file that
contains the hostnames of servers with arrays to manage. If such a file
exists, Data Organizer tries to extract hostnames from this file. If it
succeeds, it contacts each server in the file and displays a list of the LUNs
on each array (subsystem) connected to the server. When it has contacted all
the servers, it tries to enable statistics logging for each SP on each array,
and then it opens the LUN Management window.
If the .hosts file does not exist, it asks if you want to use the file
pointed to by the optional RAID_ARRAY_HOSTS environmental variable. If the
variable does not exist, it opens the Host Administration window. If the
variable exists, it tries to extract the hostnames of servers from the file
pointed to by the variable. If it does not succeed, it opens the Host
Administration window. If it succeeds, it contacts each server in the file and
displays a list of LUNs on each array (subsystem) connected to the server. When
it has contacted all the servers, it enables statistics logging for each SP on each
array, and then it opens the LUN Management window.
 |
NOTE:
If Data Organizer cannot communicate with a server or cannot enable statistics logging for an SP any of its arrays, it displays an error message. |
What next?
If the LUN Management window opens - Go to the
"LUN Management window" section
to learn about this window.
If the Host Administration window opens - Continue to the section
"Using the Host Administration window" to specify the hostnames for
the servers with arrays whose LUNs you want to manage.
To exit a Data Organizer session
- From any Data Organizer window with a menu bar,
follow the menu path File ®
Exit.
A confirmation window opens.
- In the confirmation window, click the OK button.
Figure 2-3. Host Administration window

The Host Administration window opens when you start a Data Organizer session
if no server hostnames are in the .hosts file or in the file pointed to by the
optional RAID_ARRAY_HOSTS environment variable if you tell Data Organizer to
use this variable. In this situation, the list of host identifiers in the
window is empty. You can open the window during a Data Organizer session from
the LUN Management window by following the menu path File
 Select
Hosts. In this situation, the list contains the hostnames from this list. Servers
on this list are called managed servers.
To add a server to the list
- For each server that you want to add, follow these steps:
- In the Host Identifier field, enter the server hostname.
- Click the Add button.
The hostname appears in the list of servers below the Host Identifier field.
- When the list contains all the server hostnames you require, click the OK button.
A window opens asking if you want to save the new host list in the .host
file in your home directory. You should save the list if it contains only
servers with arrays whose LUNs you want to manage in most future Data
Organizer sessions. Do not save the list if you added servers that you want to
manage in the current Data Organizer session only.
 |
NOTE:
If you save the host list, it is
always written to the .hosts file and not to the file pointed to by the RAID_ARRAY_HOSTS variable,
which Data Organizer never changes. |
- In the window, click the Yes button to save the new server list to the .hosts file in your
home directory; otherwise, click the No button.
If you add the wrong name, you can remove it from the list, as described in the procedure
that follows, and then add the correct name.
Data Organizer contacts each server you just added, and displays a list of the LUNs it
finds on each managed array connected to the server.
 |
NOTE:
If Data Organizer cannot communicate with
a server you added to the list, it displays an error message. |
- In each window that lists LUNs for a server, click the OK button.
Data Organizer enables statistics logging for each SP in each array it found connected to
the servers you just added.
To remove a server from the list
- For each server you want to remove, follow these steps:
- Select the hostname from the list.
The selected hostname appears in Host Identifier field.
- Click the Remove button.
A confirmation window opens.
- In the window, click the Yes button to confirm the removal.
The hostname disappears from the list of servers below the field.
- When the list contains only the server hostnames you require, click the OK button.
A window opens that asks if you want to save the new host list in the .hosts file in your home
directory. You should save the list if it contains only servers with arrays whose LUNs you want
to manage in most future Data Organizer sessions. You should not save the list if you removed
servers that you do not want to manage in the current Data Organizer session only.
 |
NOTE:
If you save the host list, it is written to the .hosts file and never to the
file pointed to by the RAID_ARRAY_HOSTS variable. |
- In the window, click the Yes button to save the new server list to the .hosts file; otherwise, click the No button.
A window opens listing the LUNs on each server whose hostname you just
removed. The current Data Organizer session no longer manages these LUNs, and
it removes any icons for these LUNs from its windows, provided the managed
array with the LUNs is not connected to another server. If any removed LUN
icon represents a LUN in a LUN Group, Data Organizer gives you the option of
removing the LUN from the group. If you choose to keep the LUN in the group,
the LUN becomes a Ghost LUN.
- Click the OK button.
Data Organizer removes the icon for each LUN on each array on each server that
you removed, provided that the array with the LUN is not connected to another
server that is still on the list. It removes them from the array selection
area of its LUN Management window
(see LUN Management window).
What next?
Continue to the next section "Selecting the application mode."
A Data Organizer session operates in Performance mode or Status mode. In Performance
mode, the icons in the Data Organizer windows display information about the utilization of the
managed LUNs and LUN Groups. In Status mode, they display information about the
operational state of the managed LUNs and LUN Groups.
When you start a Data Organizer session, it is in Performance mode by default. You can change
the mode whenever you want.
To change to Status mode
In the LUN Management window, follow the menu path
Options Application Mode Status
To change to Performance mode
In the LUN Management window, follow the menu path
Options Application Mode Performance
What next?
Continue to the next section "LUNs and LUN Groups and their icons."
For Data Organizer a LUN is either a Grouped LUN or an Ungrouped LUN depending on
whether it is or is not part of a LUN Group. You cannot distinguish a Grouped LUN from an
Ungrouped LUN by its icon, only by the window area in which the icon appears.
 |
NOTE:
A hot spare cannot belong to a LUN Group. |
A Grouped LUN becomes a Ghost LUN in either of the following situations:
- The LUN is unbound.
- The hostnames for all servers connected to the array with the LUN are removed from the host list.
 |
NOTE:
Ungrouped LUNs cannot be Ghost LUNs. |
When a LUN becomes a Ghost LUN, Data Organizer replaces its LUN icon with a Ghost LUN
icon.
A LUN Group becomes a Ghost LUN Group in either of the following situations:
- All its LUNs are unbound, that is, it becomes empty.
- The hostnames for all servers connected to all arrays with LUNs in the group are removed from the host list.
Whenever you do either of the above operations, Data Organizer warns you that the LUN
Group will become a Ghost Group, and asks if you want to ungroup it. When a LUN Group
becomes a Ghost LUN Group, Data Organizer replaces its LUN Group icon with a Ghost LUN
Group icon.
LUN icons
The icon for a Non-Ghost LUN or a
Ghost LUN consists of a LUN image and a LUN name.
LUN icon image
The image in a LUN icon varies with the type

Figure 2-6. LUN Group Administration window

The LUN Group Administration window lets you performs these operations:
- Create and dissolve LUN Groups.
- Add LUNs to or remove them from LUN Groups.
 |
NOTE:
You can also perform these operations using options from the Group or LUN menus
in the LUN Management window. Using these menu options can be quicker because they often let you perform fewer
actions to complete the operation. When you perform an operation with one of these menu options, you cannot
view the LUNs that make up a group as you can when you perform it from the LUN Group Administration window. |
To display the LUN Group Administration window
Either
Select a LUN Group, and follow the menu path Group ® Edit.
Or
Follow the menu path Group ® New, enter the
name for a new LUN Group in the window that opens, and click the OK button.
Ungrouped LUNs Information area
The Ungrouped LUNs Information area is where you select the Ungrouped LUNs on which you want to perform operations. It consists of a Select Host filter, a Select Array filter, and an Ungrouped LUNs selection area.
Select Host and Select Array filters
The Select Host and Host Array filters let you represent, in the Ungrouped LUNs
selection area, only LUNs on a particular array or set of arrays connected to a
particular server. These filters do not affect the list of managed hosts. They
merely determine the servers that have LUNs on their arrays represented
by icons in the Ungrouped LUNs selection area.
Ungrouped LUNs selection area
The Ungrouped LUNs selection area contains an icon for each LUN that is not in a LUN Group and is on the arrays on the servers specified by the Host and Array filters.
 |
NOTE:
You cannot add a hot spare to a LUN Group; therefore, icons for hot spares never appear in the Ungrouped LUNs Information area. |
LUN Groups Information area
The LUN Groups Information area is where you select the LUN Group on which you want to perform operations. It consists of a Group Name filter and a Grouped LUNs selection area.
Group Name filter
The Group Name filter lets you select the LUN Group that you want to edit. When you create a new LUN Group using the New Group button, the name that you enter for the new group appears in the Group Name filter.
