Software Installation: Creative PC-DVD™ Encore Dxr™2 User's Guide

Step 1: Install the PC-DVD Encore Device DriversStep 2: Install the PC-DVD Player Application

Step 1: Install the PC-DVD Encore Device Drivers

After you install your PC-DVD drive and Dxr2 decoder card, you may install the PC-DVD software. The PC-DVD Drivers Disk contains drivers necessary to operate your DVD-ROM drive. The software installation varies according to your computer's operating system.

Windows 95

NOTE: If you are not sure whether you have Microsoft® Windows® 95 or Windows 95 OSR2, see Step 1: Learn the Windows 95 Version.

The DVD-ROM drive functions in Windows 95 once it is connected to your existing Enhanced IDE connector on your motherboard.

Use the PC-DVD Drivers Disk if you wish to use the drive in MS-DOS mode. To install the DVD-ROM drivers for MS-DOS mode, perform the following steps:

  1. Choose the Start button.
  2. Choose Run.... The Run dialog box is displayed.
  3. Insert the PC-DVD Drivers Disk into your diskette drive.
  4. Type the letter of the diskette drive and type SETUP; for example, A:\SETUP or B:\SETUP and click OK.
The installation program prepares the InstallShield Wizard to guide you through the application setup.
  5. The README.TXT file appears. Read this file before you proceed with the installation.
  6. Click Next. The Choose Destination Location dialog box appears. The default path is C:\Program Files\SBCD\.
  7. To change the destination directory, click Browse.
  8. When the destination path is correct, choose Next. The installation program copies the files to your computer. The Device Selection dialog box appears.
  9. Select the device that you have connected to the CD-ROM drive:
    • IDE Hard Disk Controller Card if the CD-ROM drive is daisy-chained to the primary port.
    • Onboard IDE Secondary Port if the CD-ROM drive is connected to a secondary IDE port.
    • Plug and Play Card if you attached the drive to a Plug and Play interface card.
    • Non-Plug and Play Card if the drive is connected to a non-Plug and Play interface card.
  10. Click Finish to restart your computer.

DMA Support (Windows 95 OSR2)

NOTE: If you are not sure whether you have Microsoft® Windows® 95 or Windows 95 OSR2, see Step 1: Learn the Windows 95 Version.

Direct memory access (DMA) transfer improves the smoothness of the video display. To attain maximum transfer rates in Windows 95, you must activate DMA support. Perform the following steps:

  1. Click the Start button, select Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the System icon and click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Select the DVD-ROM drive and select its Settings tab.
  4. Under Options, select the DMA check box; if the DMA check box is grayed out, DMA is not available for your drive.

Manual Driver and Software Installation

If you need to install the driver and software manually, perform the following steps:

  1. Click the Start button on the Windows 95 Taskbar, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Add New Hardware icon and follow the instructions on the screen.

See your Windows 95 documentation for more information.

Windows 98

The DVD-ROM drive functions in Windows 98 once it is connected correctly to your existing Enhanced IDE connector on your motherboard.

Windows NT 4.0

  1. Click the Start button, select Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Multimedia icon.
  3. Click the Audio Devices tab, click the Add option, and choose the Unlisted or Updated Driver option. Click OK.

  • Typical installation creates a program group in Windows 95 that includes PC-DVD Player, PC-DVD Help, and Readme.
  • Compact installation reduces the hard-disk space required by not installing some files, such as the Help files.
  • Custom installation allows you to select the components you want to install.
