Troubleshooting: SAMSUNG SW-252S CD-R/RW Drive User's Guide


Symptoms

Solutions

  1. Drive is not recognized.

  1. If the power connector is not inserted, insert it properly.
  2. If the interface connector is not inserted, insert it properly.
  3. If the jumper-pin setting is wrong, confirm the setting and correct it.
  4. Check the system BIOS to make sure the E-IDE interface is turned on.

  1. Disc inserted in drive does not play.

  1. If the disc is dirty (fingerprints, etc.), clean it.
  2. If the disc is scratched, do not insert it into the drive.
  3. If the disc is inserted upside-down, reinsert it in the proper direction.
  4. If the drive is not recognized, refer to solutions 1-1 to 1-4.

  1. Disc tray does not open

  1. If the power connector is not inserted, insert it properly.
  2. If the interface connector is not inserted, insert it properly.
  3. If the indicator does not light, refer to solutions 1-1 to 1-4.

  1. Certain types of discs do not play.

  1. This drive only supports discs with the formats indicated in the "Introduction" and "Specifications" sections. It cannot read the data on discs with other formats. Check the disc's format.

  1. Cannot read or write discs.

  1. Is the condition of everything else in the system (CPU, hard drive, and others) as it should be?
  2. Does the CD-R/RW disc have dirt or scratches?
  3. Did a screen saver or other application operate while writing to the disc?
  4. Is there enough free space on the CD-R/RW disc?
  5. Does writing fail even using the writing application's simulation test?
  6. Is the disc loaded in the drive with the read/write surface facing the right direction? (label up)
  7. Was the drive or disc recently moved from a low temperature environment to a high temperature environment? (There is a possibility of condensation on the lens in the drive or on the surface of the disc.)

  1. When playing an audio CD, the CD player shows that the disc is playing, but no sound is heard through the speakers.

  1. The drive's play mode may need to be set to "Digital." In Windows XP, for example, use the Control Panel and open "System" and then "Hardware." Start Device Manager and in "CD-ROM drives," double-click on the entry for the drive, then click on the "Properties" tab. Check the box marked "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device."
  2. The CD player application may need to be set to "Digital." In Windows Media Player, for example, from the menu bar click on "Tools," then "Options," and then click on the "Device" tab. Select the drive and click on the "Properties" button. Set the playback mode to "Digital."
