Connecting Audio Devices

For Dell Dimension XPS Rxxx systems with on-board audio, there are 3 audio device connectors on the back panel of the computer:

  • A line-out jack (green) for connecting the audio cable from speakers with integrated amplifiers
  • A line-in jack (blue) for connecting the line-out cable from record/playback devices such as cassette players, CD players, and VCRs
  • A microphone jack (red) for connecting the audio cable from a personal computer microphone

Adjusting Volume

To adjust the volume through the Microsoft Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 operating system, click the yellow speaker icon at the bottom-right of your screen. A small window appears with a slidebar. Click and hold the slidebar; then move it up to increase the volume or down to decrease the volume. (To display the full five-panel Volume Control screen, double-click the speaker icon.)

If a Turtle Beach Montego sound card and Voyetra software are installed, the Voyetra V icon replaces the yellow speaker icon. Double-click the Voyetra icon to display the AudioStation 2 Audio Mixer screen, from which you can use the slide switches to adjust the sound volume and tone.

Returning to Default Settings

Telephony Audio Cable

The telephony audio cable connects a modem to a sound device to enable the speakerphone features of the modem. (The cable cannot be used on modems that do not support voice or that do not have a speaker jack.)

NOTE: In addition to the required hardware (voice modem, audio cable, and speakers), a telephony software program is necessary. Dell does not currently install telephony software.

The modem and the sound device may be connected via an internal or external telephony audio cable in one of the following configurations.

Internal Audio Cable

For some systems containing Dell-installed modem and sound options, the cable is configured internal to the system:

External Audio Cable

Some systems use an external audio cable connected on the back of the computer. For these systems, an external audio cable is included with every modem, whether the modem is part of the original system or purchased as an upgrade. Modem/sound/external cable configuration is described in the following table.

  Modem installed No modem
Sound card installed Connect the external audio cable from the modem's SPEAKER connector to the sound card's line-in connector. No telephony audio cable included or necessary.
On-board audio Connect the external audio cable from the modem's SPEAKER connector to the system's line-in connector.
No sound Do not connect the external audio cable.
