Replacing the System Board

  1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

  2. Remove the computer cover (see Replacing the Computer Cover).

WARNING: The processor heat sink can get very hot during normal operation. Be sure that the heat sink has had sufficient time to cool before you touch it.
  1. Remove the processor heat sink (see Replacing the Processor Heat Sink).

  2. Remove all the expansion cards (see Removing PCI and PCI Express Cards).

  3. Remove any additional components that may restrict access to the system board.

CAUTION: Carefully note the routing and location of each cable before you disconnect it, so that you are sure to re-route cables correctly. An incorrectly routed or a disconnected cable could lead to computer problems.
  1. Disconnect all cables from the system board.

CAUTION: If you are replacing the system board, visually compare the replacement system board to the existing system board to make sure that you have the correct part.
  1. Remove the 10 screws that secure the system board to the chassis.

  1. Carefully, lift the system board out of the computer.

  2. Transfer components from the existing system board to the replacement system board, if applicable.

  3. Orient the system board by aligning the screw holes on the system board with the screw holes on the chassis.

  4. Replace the 10 screws to secure the system board to the chassis.

  5. Replace the processor heatsink (see Replacing the Processor Heat Sink).

  6. Replace any expansion cards that you removed (see Installing PCI and PCI Express Cards).

  7. Replace any additional components that you removed from the system board.

  8. Reconnect all cables to the system board.

  9. Replace the computer cover (see Replacing the Computer Cover).

  10. Connect your computer and devices to electrical outlets, and then turn them on.

  11. Flash the system BIOS, as needed.
